How to set cost per item in Shopify
Cost per item is what you pay for a product. Shopify uses it to calculate margin and profit, and BulkOps.ai reads it as the cost variable in every pricing formula. If it is empty, margins and profit reports are blank and formula pricing skips the product — so getting it filled in is worth doing first.
Set it on a single product
- In Shopify admin, open Products and pick a product.
- Scroll to the Pricing section.
- Enter a value in Cost per item. Shopify instantly shows the Margin and Profit beside it.
- Click Save. For products with variants, set the cost on each variant.
Tip. Cost per item is never shown to shoppers. It is internal data used only for your margins, profit, and pricing rules.
Doing it for hundreds of products
Editing costs one product at a time does not scale. Two faster routes:
- Import a CSV — if your supplier sends a price list, map the cost column and update every product at once.
- Bulk-set in BulkOps.ai — filter a group of products and set or adjust cost across all of them, with a preview and one-click rollback.
See How to bulk-set cost per item for all products for the step-by-step.
Why it matters downstream
| Feature | Needs cost per item? |
|---|---|
| Margin & profit reporting | Yes — blank without it |
Formula pricing (cost variable) | Yes — product is skipped if empty |
| Low-margin data-quality checks | Yes |
| Per-order profit | Yes |
Troubleshooting
Margin shows as blank. The variant has no cost per item — add one and save.
Formula pricing skipped a product. That product is missing cost. BulkOps.ai skips it rather than mis-pricing; add the cost and re-run.
